Title: Spider Bites (ER)
Feed: CWKN #386, May 21, 2008
Time: 1:44
SUGGESTED LEAD: IT’S CALLED L. RECLUSA… IT LIVES IN DARK, HIDDEN AWAY PLACES, IS OFTEN ACTIVE AT NIGHT, ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF YEAR, AND ITS BITE IS PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS FOR CHILDREN.  AND, AS WE SEE IN THIS REPORT FROM CONNECT WITH KIDS, IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE …THIS IS ONE UGLY SPIDER.
<<PKG>>

NATS:  “And when I look at it here, I can see two little fang marks and then I see two other little fang marks so that’s what spiders do, they have little bitty jaws and they bite very close together.”

NARR: 11-YEAR-OLD JOSH HAYNES GOT OUT OF THE SHOWER TWO DAYS AGO AND FELT A STING ON HIS HIP. (:05)

NATS: Dr. Johnston:  “Where all do you hurt?”  Josh:  “My neck and my back.”  Dr. “Your neck hurts and your back and your stomach hurts”

NARR: AND THERE IS A TINY CHANCE THAT HE’LL HAVE KIDNEY DAMAGE…. AND HE COULD BECOME ANEMIC. (:05)

SUPER: Carden Johnston, M.D., Emergency Room Pediatrician (:30)
“If his red blood cells get torn up, they go to bilirubin which turns yellow… his eyes will turn yellow and then the hemoglobin will come out his urine and his urine will turn dark, almost coca-cola colored, so we’re looking for that in Josh…we’re hoping it doesn’t occur because it’s rare but he’s already shown us that he has rare reactions”

NARR: THIS IS OUR VILLAIN, THE BROWN RECLUSE SPIDER … A SMALL, UN-AGGRESSIVE SPIDER THAT SOME CALL A FIDDLE-BACK. (:07)

(Dr. Carden Johnston, Emergency Room Pediatrician)
“On the back of the thorax, there’s a thing that looks like the shape of a fiddle with a long neck coming out the bottom.”

NARR:  ITS BITE IS SERIOUS BUT VERY SELDOM FATAL. SYMPTOMS ARE A LOW FEVER, NAUSEA, POSSIBLE JOINT PAIN…AND, AT FIRST, A RED AREA SURROUNDING THE BITE. (:11)

(Dr. Carden Johnston/Emergency Room Pediatrician)
“And then the center turns black and the little hole falls out and then it starts healing… so over a period of two weeks it’ll heal.”

NARR:  TREATMENT IS A COLD COMPRESS, PAINKILLERS, PLENTY OF LIQUIDS, AND PARENTS WATCHING OUT FOR EYES THAT TURN YELLOW AND URINE THAT TURNS DARK. (:09)

SUPER:  Ann Klasner, M.D., Emergency Room Pediatrician (1:30)
“Your urine sample, your pee is normal …so that’s good so I think that everything is going to be fine with this for now and we’re going to let you go home and bring you back to be re-checked tomorrow.”

NARR: I’M COLLIN SIEDOR, FOR CONNECT WITH KIDS. (:03)

SUGGESTED TAG:  THE BROWN RECLUSE SPIDER GENERALLY LIVES UP TO ITS NAME: IT IS SHY, AND LIKES TO HIDE IN ATTICS, CLOSETS THAT ARE SELDOM USED, WOODPILES AND STORAGE SHEDS.
