Tons of people including my friends download copyrighted music daily. They feel that they aren’t personally affecting how much money an artist is losing, or they believe that there is no way that they will be personally caught downloading copyrighted music. I have never downloaded copyrighted music because the way I view it is that it is stealing. There is no other way to put it. When you download copyrighted music you are stealing from the artist, and that is just plain illegal.
I had never given much thought to downloading music illegally until I really got to know my best friend’s brother. He works in the music business in Nashville, and if you ask him about his opinion on downloading music he will give it to you straight. It’s completely unacceptable and is definitely stealing. He won’t even copy a CD for a friend because it takes away profit from the artist. When you download illegally the artist never gains credit for selling music. How wrong is that? If you like an artist, then support him or her by actually purchasing the music and giving credit to the artist. Don’t try to spare a few dollars by downloading copyrighted music. If you do, you are just joining millions of people in committing the crime of stealing.

“There are no consequences”… “No one ever gets caught”… “It’s easy”… “There are a million websites that host it”….

There are countless excuses that kids use to justify downloading illegal music from the internet. Some of my friends have even given one of these a time or two. They don’t think about it. They just type in a website, and in a couple of minutes, they’ve got 300 new songs for cds, ipods, etc… It’s just part of the routine. It’s not something we think about consciously. I don’t think about it, but then again, I don’t do it. I don’t think I could do it, and I KNOW that I definitely couldn’t THINK about doing it…It’s not that I’m so high and mighty, because I’m not. The reason I couldn’t personally download illegal music is summed up in the following sentence: A really close family friend is a songwriter in Nashville. This guy grew up with my dad; they went to high school together. He’s been to our house. My parents always go support him at his concerts when he comes into town, even though he needs no help filling up the house. He has written some pretty well known pieces for HUGE stars, stuff that I actually have heard of and listen to….stealing music would be like stealing from him…So in response to the general excuses: There are no consequences? WRONG!! For me, there is one HUGE consequence: GUILT!…No one ever gets caught? Not true!! I would know….It’s easy? Maybe, but I have a face to go with the name of who is supposed to be receiving the royalties….There are a million websites that host it? Yes, but there are a bunch of websites that do things the legal way…It is just as easy to use one of those, like iTunes! 99 cents per song is not that hard to pay. As a popular tv commercial says, “That’s not even a dollar!”

If you really like an artist, pay for the music and support them. If you don’t like an artist, you don’t want the music anyway—issue eliminated.
