A friend of mine just got back from her grandson’s first birthday party. It was held at the Ritz Carlton: 70 people, five-course dinner, DJ and dancing, handmade individual birthday cakes, games and rides and entertainment for all, including about 40 children doing a conga-line through the tables all night long. Over-the-top, you think? You might think that, until the father of birthday boy got up to speak.

This week’s blog sparked quite a debate in our offices when I asked the question: Would you give your child a drug to enhance his or her academic performance?

The subject came up because one of our news producers – Emily Halevy – is producing a news story about children using behavioral drugs such as Ritalin and Concerta to do better in class, on tests and on college entrance exams.
